Maraval

It is a cross between European and Japanese chestnut (Castanea sativa x Castanea crenata). It is a weaker to moderately lush tree with slightly spreading growth. It is susceptible to chestnut blight, resistant to spring cold, fairly resistant to ink disease and moderately susceptible to chestnut gall wasp. Blooms medium-early. Fruting is average. There are one or two normally developed fruit in a burr, rarely three. It is broadly elliptical-triangular in shape, shiny, dark brown reddish colour with slight bruising. At least 95 % of the fruit are monoembryonic. The testa is very weakly embedded in the kernel.
