Bouche de Betizac

It is a cross between European and Japanese chestnut (Castanea sativa x Castanea crenata). It grows luxuriantly, fairly upright when young, later the tree crown opens up. It is sensitive to spring frosts. It is less susceptible to chestnut blight, but is resistant to chestnut gall wasp. Buds and flowers relatively early. Early bearing, with high yields and regularly yielding. It usually develops two normal fruit in the burr. The fruit is very large, flat, broadly elliptical in shape, with a large hilum. The shell is an attractive dark reddish chestnut colour. 80 - 90 % of fruits are monoembryonic. The testa is very weakly embedded in the kernel.
